Feral Hacking for Climate Regeneration

Hosted by Critical Media LabWith Unbox India & Pro HelvetiaDelhi and Goa, India
2025-

Feral Hacking for Climate Regeneration is an ongoing community-engaged research project which explores how multispecies communities on the frontlines of climate emergency are applying hacking, making and other experimental platforms for material participation, in ways that transcend the limits of human-centered design. Launched in collaboration with Critical Media Lab, the project draws seed inspiration from community developments ongoing in India, the world’s most populous nation and one of its most climate vulnerable, whose peoples aim to reach net zero by 2070.
Our collaboration started with a research residency funded by the Pro Helvetia Swiss Arts Council in collaboration with Unbox Cultural Futures. We met in Delhi, where I convened the sold-out community mapping workshop ‘Calling all hackers & makers for climate <3’ at the What Design Can Do festival. Here, participants were invited to build a map that visualised where they saw feral futures emerging across India. The map was full within the hour, the stories many - illustrating the dynamism of a nation in rapid transformation. I also exchanged with The Design Village, a university in the industrial heart of Delhi with a focus on social impact and sustainability, where we opened the doors to a student exchange programme with HGK FHNW Academy of Art & Design in Basel. Our collaborations in Delhi were followed by field research along the shorelines of Goa, where I visited local makerspaces like Makers Asylum(pictured above) and cultural institutions like Museum of Goa, learning about ancestral technologies like Khazan fishing systems, and meeting local community leaders working on climate solutions at a roundtable hosted by Sadhana Dell’Arte in Panjim. I shared insights from these encounters at a public lecture for the Next Nature Museum conference Bio Design edition in Eindhoven, NL.
These seeds are tilling rich soil for further hatchings - please get in touch if you are interested in collaborating.

What is hacking, exactly...? Are hackers merely those who “enjoy the intellectual challenge of creatively overcoming the limitations of software and/or hardware” (Wikipedia 2025), or is there something more going on here? The Hacking Module was a new postgraduate course which we developed for the MA Transversal Design programme at HGK, as one of the 5 core threads which define transversal design as an emerging field which grows community infrastructures for worlds in transition - rehearsing, documenting, publishing, processing... and hacking. This course invites a joyful reclamation of the socio-technical practices of hacking, as a means of (re)worlding in times of polycrisis.

From commoning and repair to unmaking and decomposing, the DIY and DIT (Do-It-Together) legacies of hacker communities have long encouraged public experimentation with alternative futures. The rich diversity of hacker cultures has too often been omitted from mainstream technomyths of digital progress, however, which tend to orient hacking around the neoliberal innovation contexts of Silicon Valley technology moguls (Braybrooke & Jordan 2017).
In play and resistance, we explored the possibilities of hacking for systems change. We invited dialogues between hacking and its many sister-traditions, including (but not limited to) repair, commoning, cracking, debugging, shanzai, jugaad, rewilding, circularity, making, unmaking, regenerating, decomposing and alchemizing. Resurfacing ancient traces from early internets along the way, we investigated what is worth salvaging, and what is not - whilst inviting F/LOSS (Free, Libre, Open Source) alternatives to Big Tech along the way.
∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿

Sample sessions:

- Space hacking - Kunstmuseum edition - digging into the social production of space, power geometries, hacking from outside/inside.
- Narrative hacking - meme-making edition - material semiotics, AI slop & power-knowledge.
- Feral hacking - inviting non-humans to the digital banquet, watching it all go wild. Decomposing as transformation.
- Vintage web hacking - remembering the hope of the early days of world wide webs, learning how to build digital gardens, ghosts in the machine.- Culture hacking - Exploiting the cracks with situationism, culturejamming and hacktivism.- Festival hacking - Hack the Promise edition, a festival exploring politics of technology.
∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿∿
"We are the hackers of abstraction. We produce new concepts, new perceptions and new sensations […] Whatever we hack, be it programming language, poetry, math or music, curves or colorings, we are the abstracters of new worlds.”
~ Mackenzie Wark

Gentle Dismantlings was a very special collaborative issue of DING x Branch magazines which invited the next generation of posthuman feminisms across the world to share new insights & futures ~ those which challenge the structural forces that prevent us from interacting with each other, and the six million species we live alongside, in care and celebration. From carving out new cyberspace territories in the Amazônia to decolonial rewildings of ancient diversity hotspots in India's Western Ghats, the issue's 7 articles explore how to foster a just, equitable and joyful transition through alternative means of kinship. The issue also includes a unique QR-code zine which folds out as a poster, for printing and sharing in community.

Featuring:︎ 'Big Green Lies', by Gayatri Ganesh, India︎ 'No', by Iryna Zamuruieva, Scotland︎ '"The Quizumba is On": Technological Appropriation by Black Women in the Amazônia' by Thiane de Nazaré Monteiro Neves Barroa, Brazil︎ 'Fugitive Memory: for Tu’i Malila', by Dr. Kate Hennessy & Dr. Trudi Lynn Smith, Canada︎ 'Gathering Multitudes: A bag of stars', by Dr. Padmini Ray Murray, India︎ 'Obtrusive Relationships', by Dr. Georgina Voss & Dr. Eva Verhoeven, UK︎ 'Stories for Revolution' by Marjahn Finlayson, BahamasThis special issue was a real labour of love, its tales compiled across multiple time zones and realities, beginning with a wildish idea that I brought to two of my favourite magazines in Berlin, which got a rich witches' brew stirring between three organisations concerned with tech, climate & gender justice: Studio We&Us, Superrr Lab & Green Web Foundation.
It is delicate work to bring artifacts like this into being, and it was only possible with the late nights, soft steps, and careful hands of many. Details here: Letter from the Editors.

How can digital cultural engagement improve the lives of marginalised, vulnerable and/or hard-to-reach publics in times of crisis? As theatres, museums and galleries closed their doors in London and Tokyo during the widespread Covid-19 lockdowns of 2020, our King’s Rapid Response-funded project ‘Accessing Cultural Experiences’ aimed to answer this question.

To build an understanding of the user experiences of publics unable to engage in-person with museums in London and Tokyo during the pandemic, I worked with Stephanie Janes (King’s College London) and Chihiro Sato (Keio University Tokyo to plan, convene and facilitate a six-part design sprint over 2 months (which we called a design stroll) for participants including cultural producers, elders, publics, students and institutions, including National Gallery X, V&A, British Museum, Tate, Royal Opera House, Age UK and Spiral Japan. As the pandemic raged on, we collaborated across a wide range of digital platforms, exploring how technological environments could address social isolation and loneliness in collaboration with marginalized groups. Participants co-designed 12 workable prototypes that used existing, everyday and repurposed technologies to address social isolation and foster connectedness. Details on our process can be found in this publication: Braybrooke, K. & Janes, S. & Sato, C. 2021, ‘Care-full design sprints, online? Addressing gaps in cultural access and inclusion during Covid-19 with vulnerable communities in London and Tokyo’, In C&T ’21: 10th International Conference on Communities & Technologies [free download].

As a senior researcher on the project Urban-Rural Assembly with Technische Universität Berlin, UN Habitat and other partners, my team gathered qualitative data on the everyday sociospatial innovations and actor-networks of 3 Living Labs in Taizhou, China and Thüringen, Germany. These living labs explored future possibilities for sustainable urban-rural development in each region, which we imagined alongside diverse user groups which included entrepreuners, farmers, migrant workers, planners, policymakers, scientists and students. As the Covid-19 pandemic spread across China and Germany from 2019–2022, it soon became clear that many of our researchers would be unable to enter China to conduct field research. To address this challenge, we prototyped a digital ethnographic method for “see[ing] the ‘seeing’ of others” [Kato, 2014] on China’s WeChat (Weixin 微信) platform, which integrated photovoice, design probes, interviews, actor network mapping, surveys and other approaches for facilitate intercultural exchange and dialogue between users of the living labs in China and Germany. We worked with an experimental two-stage prototype model commonly implemented in user-centered design settings - building a test product, exploring its dynamics through user research, iterating according to feedback, and reworking it to suit current needs. We gained rich insights on the possibilities (and limitations) of how such an approach can be implemented to ‘make place’ across borders in times of crisis.
More info about our research methodology and process can be found in the following papers: Braybrooke, K. & Xiao, G. & Lynam, A. 2023, ‘Living Lab, interrupted? Who has the right to control the dissemination of medical knowledge? Who has the right to access the bodies of those who are underserved by society? How are power dynamics associated with ongoing barriers to healthcare access for society’s most marginalised? For this residency, a small group of artists, curators, researchers and activists were asked to explore the digital material of the Gynepunk Open Source 3D Printed Speculum, a speculative design artefact which had just been acquired by the V&A for its permanent collection. We worked with local community groups including the TransHackFeminists and public institutions such as the University College London Department of Biomechanical Engineering to explore the obstructed community histories that lied beneath the artefact's software & hardware, and produced a set of well-received public knowledge products, including publications, teaching materials, artworks and a film, which asked difficult questions about reproductive justice, the dissemination of medical knowledge, and the politics of healthcare access.

As project lead Anouska Samms explains: "Design does not exist in a vacuum. It can be argued that to understand the relationship between an object and its material fully, we need to consider the social and political questions entangled within an object’s inception. The stories surrounding [the Gynepunk’s] making are not only enmeshed within different disciplines, but also with complex emotions."

From 2015 to 2019, I was researcher-in-residence at 4 public museums in London, gathering data for my Ph.D. thesis ‘Hacking the museum? Collections makerspaces and power at London cultural institutions’. My aim was to understand user experiences of power, access and inclusion at a new generation of spaces for digital innovation that had emerged within London museums. I called these sites ‘collections makerspaces’, or experimental public spaces for digital and material participation around a cultural collection. During this period, I worked directly with museum staff (from curators and programmers to digital learning teams), collaborators (from artists to facilitators) and publics across the field sites of 4 collections makerspaces in London: Samsung Digital Discovery Centre at the British Museum; The Reading Room at Wellcome Collection; Taylor Digital Studio at TATE Britain, and Tate Exchange at TATE Modern. My data collection included: 255 hours of participant observation, 67 conversations with site users, 48 expert interviews, 5 focus groups, and 4 design interventions in collaboration with museum staff, from workshops to curated exhibits.Working with a theoretical framework informed by Michel Foucault, David Harvey and Doreen Massey, I explored how users of collections makerspaces negotiated their relations with cultural institutions through digital participation - encounters which both inhibited, and
enabled, institutional systems change.

In conclusion, I argued that collections makerspaces provided significant value to the UK cultural sector by offering public institutions the opportunity to experiment with new ways of making, learning and working. These new sociotechnical arrangements, I found, were transforming how museum staff and publics interacted with, and understood, ‘high’ culture - inviting museums to become more accessible and inclusive to a new generation of users.

	Food & Code = ???
A course for the Royal College of Art (RCA)
Design Products MA
London, UK
2016-2017
Course conveners:
Robert Philips
Kit Braybrooke
In partnership with:
Microsoft Research
Growing Underground
Tescos

This was a new practice course which I designed at the RCA with Dr Robert Philips for the Design Products MA programme to explore how designers could tackle food injustice in a rapidly changing world. We asked: In a world of digital creation, what can future food security look like? What design opportunities are there for food, technology and bio-design collaborations that solve core issues
around UK food production, distribution, consumption, and security? The course was informed by a 2016 study from Research Councils UK
which found that over 800 million people around the world still did not have adequate
access to safe, nutritious food in their communities, with global populations expected to
reach 9 billion by 2030. Our relationship with food has become costly and distant, we argued, our
consumption reliant on distant international producers. As design practitioners, we believed opportunities existed for transformative change through critical design pedagogies - the kind that make worlds.Following a series of tours and design crits which animated perspectives from a variety of disciplines - including agri-tech, local vs
global food production, food delivery, food securities, environmental issues and food consumption - students prototyped a pioneering cohort of design solutions, from the
imaginative to the pragmatic, in
collaboration with UK leaders across related industries, including Microsoft Research, Tescos and Growing
Underground. Student interventions were not merely about the ‘design of food’ at the
level of consumption, but also about unexpected innovations that faced injustice throughout the production process.
Together, we investigated future solutions in which future food technologies intervened for change.

Critical making

In 2018 and 2019, I joined a national delegation of maker-researchers exploring Chinese maker and craft ecosystems with the British Council Living Research project in China. We began fieldwork in the cities of Chengdu in the province of Sichuan and Xi'an in the Shaanxi province, investigating the local dynamics and possibilities of over 40 collective spaces for making, craft and design in both regions, from corporate design labs to open hardware factories and rural villages focused on maintaining intangible cultural heritage. Our first field study analysed the close relationship between maker cultures and national government policy, which positioned makerspaces and other sites of digital innovation as catalysts for economic transformation. In 2019, our research team was awarded a £15,000 grant from the British Council to return to Chengdu, where the socio-ecological model of the circular economy was being instituted through compulsory recycling laws for the first time, to explore how creative practitioners interpreted circularity in their daily lives. We found evidence of a rich legacy of informal approaches to sustainability, working alongside makers, crafters, designers, businesses and government officials to envision new economic models that would invite creative participation.
