Dérive Drift
Uroboros Festival
Prague, CZ
2020

Dérive: “A mode of experimental behavior linked to the conditions of urban society; a technique of rapid passage through varied ambiances” “an emotional (dis)orientation.” - Guy Debord, Les Lèvres Nues #9, 1956

While psychogeographic approaches have typically examined physical terrains in the cities we move through, what might it look like to explore the local spaces of care, escape, solitude and refuge that shape virtual and other screenic worlds? The Dérive Drift was launched in collaboration with RMIT Care-full Design Lab collaborator Jaz Hee-jeong Choi to offer playful provocations in the form of the dérive which invited personal socio-spatial explorations of the small spaces, places and memory palaces that frame everyday life.

After a prototype Dérive Drift which explored concepts of transformation and flux during covid-19 lockdowns, funded by CreaTures (Creative Practices for Transformational Futures), a public Drift was launched at Uroboros Festival. In 2021, Dérive Drift was developed by Hee-jeong Choi and collaborators at the Care-full Design Lab and CreaTures into a More-than-Human Dérive for Melbourne Knowledge Week, a multi-sensory exploration of Australia’s urban forests.
